What causes knee problems?

Knee pain can be caused by an injury or a breakdown of the bones or soft tissues that stabilize and cushion the joint. Knee injuries that cause fractures, dislocation and ligament or meniscus tears can affect anyone. However, they're typically more common among athletes and those with more active lifestyles.

Repetitive motion injuries like bursitis and tendonitis are common causes of knee pain. Knee injuries can also contribute to the development of arthritis, which is the most common cause of knee pain for people over 50. Osteoarthritis is a "wear-and-tear" condition in which the cartilage that cushions and protects your knees' bones deteriorates. As the knee condition progresses, pain often intensifies and your range of motion may decrease.

How can I practice good knee health?

Like the hip, the knee is a weight-bearing joint, so any extra weight you're carrying adds stress to the joint. Daily exercise and activity are essential to keeping your knees healthy and moving freely. Low-impact exercises like swimming and cycling are easier on your joints and require less lateral motion than more intense sports like basketball, tennis or football.

Strength training is also critical to proper knee health but check with your physician before beginning a training routine. Exercises focusing on the upper and lower legs are beneficial, as strengthening these muscles increases stability and takes the workload off your knees. Yoga and stretching promote excellent flexibility and balance, which can prevent falls and other injuries.

We use special diagnostic and surgical instruments for minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures and robotic-assisted joint replacement technology for precision and steadiness.

When you undergo a robotic-assisted procedure, your surgical team will make a 3D computerized model of your knee joint. This will act as a guide during the procedure, so your surgeon knows precisely where bone gets removed and where the implant goes. The robotic arm used in your surgery moves the way in which your surgeon's hand would.
