 What is an epilepsy center?

What is an epilepsy center?

An epilepsy center is comprised of a team of medical specialists who are uniquely trained through fellowships and board certification to diagnose and treat a wide variety of conditions related to epilepsy and seizure disorders. Evaluations are conducted through diagnostic testing, typically through EEG video monitoring and neuroimaging. Treatments can include a ketogenic diet and resective surgery. To be considered a comprehensive epilepsy center, an organization must meet the national standards set by National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC), which recognizes four levels of care.

Level I involves a standard epilepsy evaluation at an emergency room or a physician’s office. Level II involves a consultation with a general neurologist. Levels III and IV are considered the highest national standards of epilepsy care.
