Carotid IMT

Using ultrasound technology to evaluate cardiovascular disease

The carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) is a test we use to identify the presence of cardiovascular disease by measuring the thickness of the walls of your carotid arteries. It is a painless test that often identifies signs of cardiovascular disease missed by other tests such as stress testing or an angiogram. Males ages 30 to 45 and women ages 30 to 55 benefit from the information provided by a carotid IMT exam.

The carotid IMT is measured through the use of advanced ultrasound technology. Your primary care physician may use it to diagnose cardiovascular disease along with other tests such as blood work and screenings for high blood pressure and cholesterol.
