Cardiovascular care centered on you
At Novant Health, our cardiovascular experts provide personalized care for your congenital heart defect. Congenital heart disease (CHD), or defects, like atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects or patent foramen ovales, are present at birth. However, many people can be unaware of their condition until adulthood or when symptoms begin to show. Medical advances have also allowed for a higher number of adults living with CHD, and some adults may assume that they have outgrown their condition. It is important to know that follow up care is key with effectively managing this disease. Our experts will work with you to establish your medical history and symptoms to create a plan that works for your life.
Your Novant Health provider may recommend one or more of the below treatments for your adult congenital heart disease (ACHD).
- Special procedures using catheters. Some congenital heart defects, such as an atrial septal defect (ASD), can be repaired using catheterization techniques.
- Routine visits. Relatively minor heart defects may only require periodic checkups with your doctor to make sure your condition doesn't worsen. These visits may include screenings and monitoring of conditions as well as education and guidance in managing your disease.
- Medication. Some mild congenital heart defects can be treated with medications that help the heart work more efficiently or to prevent blood clots or to control an irregular heartbeat.
- Implantable heart devices.
