Protect and improve your health with regular medical screenings
Health screenings are important tools for preventing serious illness or finding conditions that increase your risk of becoming sick. Even if you are in good physical condition and feeling well, monitoring can give you valuable information that you can use to stay healthy.
Novant Health offers many types of screening, to ensure the information your doctor needs is available for a range of health concerns. These are some of the screenings that may be available, depending on your condition:
Health risk assessments
An assessment is typically a questionnaire to help identify health risks. The information you provide allows our counselors and coaches to help you identify and address health risks such as:
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol levels
- Heart disease
While a health risk assessment gives you general information about risk, a biometic screening gives you numbers. Knowing your numbers allows you to compare your readings to recommended levels and compare year-to-year, so you can recognize major changes. When combined with a health risk assessment, you will have a reliable forecast about your risk for chronic preventable diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension. Some of the biometric screenings we provide include:
- Basic cardiovascular screening: Measures your good (HDL), bad (LDL) and total cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose as an indication of risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
- Peripheral arterial disease screening: Checks for hardening of the arteries for early detection of cardiovascular diseases.
- Heel DEXA screening: Assesses bone strength to detect the risk for osteoporosis.
Cardiac calcium scoring: This noninvasive test uses a CT scan to show narrowing of the artery walls leading to the heart, which can cause damage to the heart muscle.
Carotid intima-medial thickness: Also called Carotid IMT ultrasound or CIMT, the procedure allows your doctor to get a measure of the thickness of the walls of your carotid arteries, which carry blood to your head. Thickening of these artery walls can suggest an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
CT colonography: Sometimes called a virtual colonoscopy, the procedure can produce 3D images that show growths in your colon and rectum.
Mammography: Used to find breast cancer in its early stages, when the cure rates are highest. Novant Health has locations provide routine mammograms, as well as diagnostic mammograms, which may be appropriate if you have a lump, breast pain or a higher risk of breast cancer.
