When are emergency departments open?

Our emergency departments are open and available to help you 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Find the Novant Health emergency department nearest you.

When do the doctors work?

We always have doctors, physician assistants and nurse practitioners that specialize in emergency medicine at our emergency departments, no matter what time you visit.

What if I need more advanced care or need to be admitted?

Our emergency departments work closely with our Novant Health hospitals and healthcare specialists, as well as a variety of other healthcare partners. If you need a higher level of care or need to be admitted, our experts are located just steps away.

Do I have to pay before being treated?

We treat all patients regardless of their ability to pay. Our financial counselors are available to discuss assistance programs, payment plans and charity care programs, as needed.

I'm not sure if I need to come to the emergency department. Can you give me medical advice over the phone?

Unfortunately, the emergency department cannot provide medical advice over the phone. However, Novant Health offers a free nurse line, Novant Health care line, for questions such as these. Now a single call will connect you to a highly qualified nurse who will carefully evaluate your needs and advise the best course of treatment for you whether it be the emergency department, urgent care or a primary care physician. Learn more about Novant Health care line If you or a loved one experiences any of the following symptoms, please call 911 and ask them to take you to the nearest Novant Health location:

  • Chest pain
  • Stroke
  • Serious injury or trauma
  • Difficulty breathing

However, many other symptoms and conditions can be treated just as effectively at a Novant Health urgent or convenient care. These include:

  • Sprains, strains and bone fractures
