Sanjeev Aggarwal, MD

Sanjeev Aggarwal, MD, medical director of Novant Health Cancer Center since opening in February 2007, has earned his reputation as a highly qualified and respected physician who is dedicated to providing the most advanced, complete care to each patient's medical and emotional needs.

Dr. Aggarwal, board-certified in radiation oncology, has been recognized by patients and his peers as a top doctor by Washingtonian magazine and Northern Virginia Magazine – awards that emphasize his dedication to ensuring patients receive comprehensive cancer care.

"As a radiation oncologist and the medical director of a cancer center, I do more than just provide radiation therapy," explains Dr. Aggarwal. "My ultimate goal is to educate each patient to help him or her understand the disease, the diagnosis and the next steps." By listening to each patient and providing as much information as possible, including all treatment options, Dr. Aggarwal strives to help each patient make an informed decision about his or her own care and be comfortable with the treatment process.

Dr. Aggarwal has experience treating all forms of cancer and has led several groundbreaking initiatives at Novant Health Cancer Center. Under Dr. Aggarwal's leadership, the cancer center became the first site in the Washington, D.C., area to use RapidArc treatment system. Dr. Aggarwal has pioneered the use of RapidArc to treat various types of cancer, including prostate cancers, brain tumors, breast cancers, pancreatic cancers and rectal cases.

Another innovative care approach that Dr. Aggarwal has helped establish at the cancer center is the use of national multidisciplinary tumor boards to review unique cases. By presenting complex and rare cases before a panel of nationally recognized experts, Dr. Aggarwal combines the center's advanced capabilities with input from the medical field's top experts to deliver the most informed, advanced care possible.

Away from the cancer center, Dr. Aggarwal is committed to serving the community by promoting the health of its residents. He often gives community lectures on cancer treatment and wellness and has supported the American Cancer Society Relay for Life events in both Prince William and Fauquier County. He also was appointed by Gov. Tim Kaine to the Virginia Tobacco Settlement Foundation in 2005 to help lead a statewide effort to curb youth tobacco use. Dr. Aggarwal was reappointed to the foundation by Gov. Bob McDonnell.

Dr. Aggarwal is a member of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). He served as track chair of the national breast cancer committee that reviews and approves all abstracts for presentation at ASTRO’s annual meeting and regularly moderates breast cancer sessions at the event.

He also is a member of the American Radium Society, the oldest society devoted to the study and treatment of cancer, and has published several papers in nationally recognized, peer-reviewed medical journals.

A northern Virginia native, Dr. Aggarwal completed his undergraduate work at the University of Virginia earning a BA in chemistry. He earned his MD at the Medical College of Virginia, where he was also awarded the prestigious Kinloch Nelson Scholarship for academic achievement and service. He completed his residency at the University of Maryland Medical System, taking a special interest in prostate and breast cancers.

While a resident, Dr. Aggarwal also completed externships at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he focused on gastrointestinal cancers; University of Washington, where he focused on prostate cancers; and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, where he focused on childhood cancers.

Dr. Aggarwal served as an assistant professor in the department of radiation medicine at Georgetown University Hospital’s Lombardi Cancer Center from 2002 to 2006. In 2005, he became the medical director for Georgetown’s southern satellite radiation oncology facility at Clinton, Maryland.

Dr. Aggarwal believes a healthy lifestyle is the foundation for a healthy life. His regular fitness routine includes running and weekly basketball games. Dr. Aggarwal lives with his wife, and their two children in northern Virginia, and enjoys both golf and bicycling.
