Dr. Merriman reviewed my chart before my visit, remembered me and key elements of my health history and listened to my concerns. He explained my treatment and why it was necessary. If I have questions, I have confidence that I can get answers in a timely manner.

I consider myself fortunate to have found a profession where I can combine my desire to care for others with my passion for science. That is why I chose to become a board-certified adult hematology and medical oncology expert. I specialize in immunotherapy, genitourinary (kidney, bladder, prostate and testicular) cancers, gastrointestinal (colorectal, pancreatic and liver) cancer and skin cancers.

My role is to help guide patients and their families through very challenging times. Mine is a unique subspecialty, requiring strong relationships and communication skills, continuity of care and active learning in an ever-changing field. The best outcomes hinge on a collaborative team of nurses, dietitians and other healthcare providers, as well as shared decision making with patients and their families.

I chair the group that develops the immuno-oncology program and lead cancer therapy clinical trials at Novant Health. I am also an investigator in the Southeast Clinical Oncology Research Consortium (SCOR), which is funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). As a member of an NCI advisory board, I regularly exchange information with the nation's foremost experts on cancer.

Being a physician and oncologist is a privilege. It is a unique role to become immediately involved in a patient's and family's medical journey and to help guide them through incredibly challenging times.

Outside of medicine, my interests include soccer, basketball and other outdoor activities. I like to unwind by spending time with my wife and son.
