As a family nurse practitioner, I have combined two of my passions - helping and educating. Before my current role, I spent 15 years as a certified critical care nurse, including several as a critical care educator. I also taught aspiring nurses at a community college in my native New York.
In 1994, I discovered the nurse practitioner career. Simply put, we're primary care providers who focus on managing patients' health conditions and preventing disease. I returned to graduate school for advanced training and became one of the few nurse practitioners in northern New York. Within this career specialty, I decided to become a family nurse practitioner because I have learned over many years of nursing that I understand my patients best when I also know their family.
Prevention is a big part of my practice. Though some patients feel they need to see their provider only when they are ill, I remind them that regular visits can help them avoid getting sick. It is so rewarding to see that approach pay off when patients make lifestyle changes and see their health improve. Sometimes small changes make a big difference, so that's what I work for.
I am a member of Sigma Theta Tau international honor society for nurses and the North Carolina Nurses Association. I am board-certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
I grew up in a small town in New York's Adirondack Mountains. My husband and I return there each summer to visit family. We lived in south Florida for five years. After Hurricane Irma left widespread destruction in the Sunshine State, we joined my sister in North Carolina in 2018. We consider ourselves half-backers, folks who moved to Florida from up North only to move halfway back to a Southeastern state.
