Novant Health names Carmen Canales chief human resources officer


WINSTON-SALEM, NC — Today, Novant Health announced Carmen Canales will join the organization as the new senior vice president and chief human resources officer effective April 20. Most recently, Canales served as the chief human resources officer at Wake Forest University.

“Carmen brings more than 25 years of executive experience across all aspects of human resources and talent management,” said Frank Emory, Jr. executive vice president and chief administrative officer for Novant Health. “Her expertise includes leadership and internal consulting roles in consumer goods, healthcare, banking, professional services, and higher education. I am thrilled that she will be joining the Novant Health team to provide visionary leadership for human resources.”

Canales joined Wake Forest University in 2011, where she led a human capital transformation to deliver customer-driven services in the areas of talent acquisition, employee engagement, organizational and leadership development, diversity and inclusion, compensation and benefits, employee relations, and HR technical solutions.

Prior to Wake Forest University, Canales was chief talent officer at Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice LLP in Winston-Salem for five years. Her career also includes experience as vice president and senior human resources business partner at Wachovia (now Wells Fargo) and manager of human resources at Pepsi-Cola. She received a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and Spanish from Michigan State University, as well as a master’s degree in labor and industrial relations from Michigan State University. 

Fluent in both English and Spanish, Canales is a servant leader in the community, having served on several boards. Carmen is a member of the Society for Human Resources Management, a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach and a FourSight facilitator.

Canales will report to Frank Emory, Jr., executive vice president and chief administrative officer for Novant Health.
