Girls on the Run Charlotte Launches Camp Program with Novant Health

For more than 21 years, Girls on the Run Charlotte has provided life-changing after-school programming to girls ages 8-13. Today, the organization—whose evidence-based curricula is known for being both fun and effective—is announcing a new program offered during school breaks called Camp GOTR.

Launching in summer 2018, Camp GOTR by Girls on the Run will provide an opportunity for girls to develop self-confidence and learn life skills they can use now and as they grow.  Girls will enjoy building friendships, being physically active, and expressing creativity through arts and crafts and storytelling. Led by caring and qualified Girls on the Run coaches, this week-long camp combines the best of the Girls on the Run program with all the fun of camp.

“Over the years we have heard from girls and families alike that they would love to see Girls on the Run offer a camp program”, said Carrie Hanson, executive director of Girls on the Run Charlotte. “We are thrilled to now offer Camp GOTR, an exciting addition to our list of programming options.  Camp GOTR provides a tremendous opportunity for girls who may have not yet experienced the magic of Girls on the Run, as well as an opportunity for girls to continue to enjoy our program beyond the school year.”

The half-day program is designed to address physical, emotional, and social development in 3rd through 5th grade girls through fun and engaging lessons.

As a current sponsor of Girls on the Run Charlotte’s fall and spring program and their end of season 5K series, Novant Health is excited to further confirm their commitment to empowering local girls by signing on as the first sponsor of Camp GOTR.

“As both a pediatrician and a parent, I have seen first-hand how Girls on the Run positively impacts girls and families in our community,” said Dr. Catherine Ohmstede, pediatrician at Novant Health Dilworth Pediatrics and pediatric service line leader for Novant Health in the greater Charlotte market. “I am thrilled that Novant Health is working with our local Girls on the Run to launch this fun and engaging summer camp program, helping our girls develop self-confidence and learn life skills even when school isn’t in session.”

Camp GOTR is open to rising 3rd – 5th grade girls and will be offered July 9-13 (Camp GOTR: Girls Have Heart) and July 23-27 (Camp GOTR: Girls Have Power) at Lake Norman Charter School in Huntersville.  Scholarships are available.
