Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center receives award for falls reduction

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. – Did you know a patient’s chance of falling doubles after his or her first fall? Novant Health works proactively to increase awareness for falls prevention for all of their patients. With support from the medical center’s corporate falls prevention team, Novant Health clinics and facilities continue to identify opportunities to remain at the forefront of falls prevention.

In recognition of the work they do to prevent falls, Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center announced that it received the 2015 Vizient Falls Reduction Award. This award recognizes hospitals at or above the 75th percentile in performance and rate of improvement in reducing the number of falls that resulted in injury between 2014 and 2015.
Novant Health medical group is using clinical decision support in Dimensions, an electronic healthcare record, to improve falls screening and interventions for patients over the age of 65. Novant Health acute care facilities have launched initiatives including ceiling tiles with reminders to call for assistance, colored arm bands, bed alarms, hourly rounding and more to keep every patient within our care safe.

Since 2011, the Central Atlantic Board has identified falls reduction as a quality initiative for the region. Monthly data is collected each year from participating hospitals and improvements in falls reduction is documented. Each year awards are given to hospitals that achieve outstanding results from the previous year.
Three Novant Health medical centers received the award including Kernersville Medical Center, Novant Health Matthews Medical Center and Novant Health Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville.
