Cancer's unexpected blessings

Finding compassion and care in the darkest hour

Larry and Mary Alice Myers have always seen their glass as half full. They have rarely been apart throughout their 48 years of marriage. Just like any couple, they have seen their share of tough times. In 1969, Larry was drafted in the Vietnam War era. A few years back, he lost a good paying job and, not long after, was making very little. But nothing could prepare them for the day that Mary Alice was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

True to form, Larry and Mary Alice have seen cancer as a blessing. In fact, before Novant Health was granted an interview with the Myers, the couple insisted that their story would include a list of every single Novant Health team member or, as they say, family member, who has made a profound difference in their lives.
