Developing mutually-beneficial and successful partnerships
Novant Health is committed to developing mutually-beneficial and successful partnerships with diverse suppliers by incorporating them into the everyday process of category reviews and product or service bids.
Novant Health's supplier-diversity initiative involves expanding our network of suppliers to include more businesses owned by women, minorities, veterans and physically-challenged individuals. We believe our vendor and business partners should better reflect our patients and communities. "We want to be a good partner in our communities and do business with all segments since our patients reflect a diverse population," says Tony Johnson, Novant Health's Senior Vice President of Materials and Logistics.
To improve on this partnership model, Novant Health created a new position in 2006 called Historically Underutiltized Business (HUB) Manager. Kevin J. Price is Novant Health's first-ever HUB sourcing manager. Kevin networks with business owners, community leaders, chambers of commerce, elected officials and nonprofit organizations. He raises awareness of Novant Health's commitment to building a diverse supplier network while also providing patients and staff with quality products and services.
Having Novant Health staff involved in vendor diversity is key because our health system is large and spread across a four-state region. Staff across the health system are encouraged to provide names and contact information of diverse business owners in the Novant Health service area.
In addition, Novant Health's supplier-diversity initiative reaches out to other resources through networking and sponsorships, including the following organizations:
The Carolinas Minority Supplier Development Council honored Novant Health in 2010 with the Council's Public-Private Sector Organization of the Year award. The honor recognized Novant Health's commitment to minority-business purchasing, technical and managerial assistance to enterprises and volume of business opportunities dedicated to minority companies.
As further recognition, the national VHA organization (originally named Voluntary Hospitals of America) recognized Novant Health with the 2012 Leadership Award for Supply Chain Management Excellence in the category of supplier diversity. Awarded only once before–to the Mayo Clinic–the honor signifies national recognition of Novant Health's continued commitment to diverse businesses. Novant Health received the award during a national presentation in Denver, Colorado.
We are committed to developing mutually-beneficial and successful partnerships with diverse suppliers by incorporating them into the everyday process of category reviews and product or service bids. The supplier-diversity initiative aims to enhance the procurement process by developing strong business relationships with a talented group of suppliers that offer quality products and services, excellent customer service and competitive costs. Through the Novant Health Supplier Diversity Registration Process, vendors are encouraged to register in our database, which provides an online supplier data-management portal to connect buyers with certified suppliers, the online purchasing people in major corporation databases, and corporate supplier-diversity seminars.
