What should we bring to the hospital?

While Novant Health Hemby Children's Hospital provides many resources and amenities for our patients and families, you will likely want to bring a few items from home to make your stay more comfortable. Please bring any items from home that your child wants or uses regularly – especially for infants. Here are some items that we recommend all families bring:

  • Your health insurance card
  • Any current medications that your child is taking
  • Pajamas and/or robe (hospital gowns are provided but many children feel more comfortable in their own pajamas)
  • Warm socks and/or slippers
  • Toothbrush, hairbrush and other toiletries
  • Glasses, contact lenses and other eye care supplies
  • Special stuffed animals, toys, pacifiers or other comfort items for your child

Please ensure that your child’s name is on all personal items to avoid them being misplaced.  We recommend that all valuables, including cash and jewelry, be left at home.

Do I need to give consent for treatment for my child?

Yes, you will need to fill out documents before any medical treatment is provided to your child. This paperwork is very important and we ask that you read and understand everything thoroughly before answering as this information will be used to help us determine the best approach for treating your child. It includes information about allergies, current medications, health history, insurance, emergency contacts, and more.  A member of the Hemby Children's Hospital team will explain these documents once you check in for your child’s stay. Please contact us if you have any additional questions.

What are our patient rights and responsibilities?

Upon admission to Hemby Children's Hospital, you will be informed of your rights and responsibilities as a patient or parent of a patient.  We will also provide you with our privacy policy regarding your child’s medical information.

What is my role in making decisions and being involved in my child’s medical treatment?

As your child’s parent or guardian, you are a valuable member of your child’s healthcare team.  You know your child better than anyone else and we value and trust your opinion. Please feel free to speak up or alert a nurse if you notice a change in your child’s condition that you feel needs attention.

Can I stay with my child?

We encourage you or a guardian to stay with your child at all times. We can bring a cot or reclining chair with linens into your child’s room so you can stay comfortably. For your convenience, each hospital room has a private bathroom, television, microwave and refrigerator.  If you leave your child alone, please tell a nurse with the best way for us to reach you in case of an emergency.

What do we do to be admitted?

If you are scheduled for admission Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., you and your child can come directly to Hemby Children's Hospital to be admitted.  Hemby Children’s Hospital is located on the second floor of Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center. You can park in the visitor’s parking deck at the corner of Hawthorne Lane and Caswell Road. From there, follow the signs to the dedicated Hemby Children’s Hospital elevator.  Please check in at the nurses’ station after arriving and they will direct you from there.

If your child is admitted outside of these hours, you may go to Presbyterian Medical Center Children’s Emergency Department (entrance off Caswell Road, between Randolph Road and 5th Street), and they will direct you accordingly.

Is the staff capable of caring for my child?

All members of the Hemby Children's Hospital care team are experts in the field of pediatrics and have received specific training in caring for children.  We understand that children have different needs than adults and we are highly qualified and prepared to meet these unique needs. Hemby Children's Hospital is also nationally recognized for high quality and has received many awards for our dedication to pediatric excellence.

What are the visiting hours at Hemby Children’s Hospital?

We believe that friends and family aid in a child’s healing process and we have open visiting hours on the general Hemby Children's Hospital floor.  Our other pediatric areas, including the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU, have a few additional restrictions for the safety of our patients.  Learn more about our visiting hours.

Please note that the Hemby Children's Hospital elevators located in the north wing lobby are closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. to decrease the noise and allow our patients to rest more comfortably.  If you are visiting during these hours, please take the “B” elevators located off of the main lobby to the second floor.

Where do I park during our stay at Hemby Children's Hospital?

You can park in the Presbyterian Medical Center visitor’s parking deck at the corner of Hawthorne Lane and 5th Street.  Once you enter the hospital through the north wing lobby, take the dedicated Hemby Children’s Hospital elevator to the second floor.  From there, check in at the nurses’ station and enter into Hemby Children's Hospital’s special environment.

The cost for parking in the parking deck is $3.00 per day and you can enter and exit as many times as you need (you will be given a receipt to show to the cashier). You can also purchase a 5-day pass for $10.00 (a savings of $5.00) to use during your stay. These passes can be purchased at the hospital gift shop or parking deck booth.
