Just for kids

Providing a special environment just for children

With brightly colored wall murals, playrooms, a covered playground and even a movie theatre, Novant Health Hemby Children's Hospital is a place where children of all ages will feel comfortable. Our rooms include amenities that make children feel at home, with a parent’s bed, private bathroom and kitchen area with a microwave, television, and an Xbox® video game system that also plays DVDs.

Blume Playroom

The Blume Playroom offers children, their siblings and visiting friends a place to "just be a kid." Brightly decorated, the playroom is filled with fun and educational toys for every age group.

Hemby Theatre

Hemby Children's Hospital Theatre

Hemby Theatre’s red carpet has all the excitement of going to the movies: tickets, concessions, stadium seating and great movies to entertain your kids. This retreat helps children and families take their minds off their illness and enjoy a movie without leaving our protected environment.

Hemby Theatre also hosts magic shows, holiday parties or your child’s own on-stage performance. With a built-in camera to record your child’s show, we will customize your DVDs for you to keep and remember this time of healing in your child’s life.

The theatre opened in 2009 with a special grant from Novant Health Foundation Presbyterian Medical Center and support from the annual Novant Health Hemby Children's Hospital Golf Classic. If you would like to donate to the Foundation, please donate now online.

Microsoft® Playground

Hemby Children's Hospital playground

This specially designed playground allows children who are feeling well enough to get some fresh air and exercise. Whether riding a bike, flying a plane or romping across “London Bridge,” the playground provides a special environment for kids to take a break from their illness, while still remaining close to the medical care they need. There are even outlets on the playground to plug in IV poles or other medical devices so playtime doesn't have to stop for medical care.

Teen Room

Hemby Children's Hospital Theatre

At Hemby, we recognize that teenagers are more than just big kids; they have different emotional needs than our younger patients. That’s why we have created the Teen Room, a special place where teens can call their own. Equipped with a flat-screen television, movies, video game cubes, board games, two computers and a printer, this room is a great place to socialize with other teen patients.

Using special programs to distract, relax & educate children with medical illnesses

Pet therapy

Sharing affection with a pet can help during your child’s recovery process by lowering blood pressure and enhancing mood and self-esteem. At Hemby Children's Hospital, we bring certified pet therapy dogs to visit 3 times a week.

For more information about pet therapy or to learn about the certification process for your dog, contact volunteer services at 704-384-4854.

Victory Junction

Hemby Children’s Hospital was the first hospital in North Carolina to partner with Victory Junction to provide their Hospital Outreach Program (HOP) and is proud to offer this fun-filled distraction free of charge to patients. The program brings the magic of camp to children who are in the hospital. Victory Junction staff provides one-on-one visits with patients on a weekly basis, bringing activities such as arts, crafts, puppets, videos and music production. They also offer monthly Camp Days, which are set up in Hemby Theatre and include camper favorites such as bowling, suction cup archery, and campfire games.

Discovery Place

We are proud to partner with Discovery Place, one of the leading hands-on science centers in the country, to bring science, nature and technology to our pediatric patients and families. Once a month, Discovery Place visits Hemby to conduct age-appropriate science experiments for children of all ages. They have activities for a group setting and also take experiments room-to-room for kids who aren’t able to leave their room. Each month’s activity is different and past experiments have included “astronaut adventures,” “dinosaur discoveries” and “micro mania.”

Beads of Courage

Hemby is the only hospital in the Charlotte area to offer Beads of Courage, a national program that partners with hospitals to help children with serious illnesses record, tell and own their stories of survival. Each colorful bead represents a procedure, hospital stay, treatment or milestone along a medical journey.

Dream on 3
