Child life

Helping your child feel safer and more relaxed

Your child’s hospitalization can be a very frightening experience for the entire family. Our certified child life specialists help create customized coping techniques to help you and your family deal with the stresses your child may encounter while hospitalized. These valued members of the Novant Health Hemby Children's Hospital healthcare team explain hospital procedures and treatments in age-appropriate language and restore your child’s sense of control. They use medical play, developmentally appropriate activities, videos and other distractions to normalize the hospital environment and make your child’s experience feel safer and more relaxing.

Internship program

A child life internship is a wonderful way to learn more about this growing area of medicine and provide support to pediatric patients and families under the guidance of a certified child life specialist. The internship allows interns to rotate throughout five departments and is only offered September through December. To become a child life specialist, an internship in a pediatric setting is required. If you are interested in applying for a child life internship at Hemby Children's Hospital, please apply here.

Through our internship program you will gain valuable insights and experience. Please contact Rebecca Brooks, certified child life specialist, at hemby@novanthealth.org or the Child Life Council for more information.
