Antibiotics treat bacterial infections, but don’t work with viruses. Some ear and sinus infections don’t require antibiotics. Some sore throats don’t need antibiotics. Green-colored mucus does not mean you need an antibiotic. Antibiotics won’t cure a cold. For the flu, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral. There are potential complications with taking antibiotics including diarrhea, stomach upset and even serious allergic reaction.
