The right prenatal care can give your baby a better start in life

If you are planning to have a baby or have already conceived, it’s time to choose medical services that help ensure you and your child the best possible outcomes. When you choose the maternity services at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, you can be sure your care team will take a comprehensive approach to looking after your medical needs.

Before and during pregnancy

Prenatal care should begin before conception. Our comprehensive approach includes a medical evaluation, education and counseling on how to minimize your medical risk.

Your care team at the Maya Angelou Women's Health & Wellness Center will include experienced, board-certified obstetricians who specialize in maternal and fetal medicine. The team will work with your personal obstetrician to address medical conditions that you may bring into pregnancy. Additionally, the team is available to work with your obstetrician if any abnormal findings are discovered during ultrasound. As a result, you can expect customized care that meets your special needs and, if necessary, those of your baby.

Our prenatal care services include:

  • Preconception consultations to discuss medical/genetic issues that may affect your pregnancy including high-risk maternal conditions. This could include genetic counseling and discussions about genetic screenings.
  • First-trimester screening to check your baby’s risk of chromosomal disorders such as Down’s Syndrome or Edwards Syndrome as well as heart problems. Some families want to know of increased risks as early as possible in a pregnancy.
  • Fetal echocardiography for diagnosing heart conditions in your baby that may need special attention both pre-delivery and post-delivery.
  • Ultrasound-guided procedures, including fetal transfusions used for treating anemia.

Care for high-risk conditions

Health problems that are present before conception can increase your risk of an early delivery or create other health problems for your or your baby. Conditions that can increase your risk include your age (younger or older than average), being overweight or underweight, previous problems with pregnancy, and chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes or lupus.

Similarly, problems such as hypertension, gestational diabetes and bleeding can develop during pregnancy to create complications for you and your baby. Your care team will monitor for these and other conditions, including preeclampsia and preterm labor.

With more than 300,000 babies delivered over 114 years at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, you can count on our maternity care team to look after you and your little one. We provide care to mothers who experience complications during pregnancy at the Women’s Care Unit at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center.

We hope you will choose Novant Health for your pregnancy care and delivery. We look forward to welcoming you and helping you stay healthy as your family grows.
