Minimally invasive surgery

The best choice for gynecological surgery

Pain and heavy bleeding don't have to be a routine part of your monthly cycle. Disorders such as uterine prolapse, fibroids and endometriosis can be effectively treated with minimally invasive surgery.

We offer the full range of minimally invasive surgical techniques resulting in less pain, reduced risk of infection, minimal scarring, a shorter hospital stay and a faster return to normal activities than with traditional surgical techniques. The Novant Health Maya Angelou Women's Health & Wellness Center also offers you the first da Vinci® robotic-assisted surgery system in the region that's dedicated solely to gynecological surgery.

da Vinci ® Surgery System

The da Vinci robotic-assisted surgical system is state-of-the-art robotic technology. The system enables the surgeon's hand movements to be scaled, filtered and translated into precise movements of micro-instruments within the operative site. The magnified, three-dimensional view the surgeon experiences enables him to perform precise surgery in complex procedures through small surgical incisions. The da Vinci system requires that every surgical maneuver be performed with direct input from the surgeon. The da Vinci system has been successfully used in thousands of gynecological procedures world-wide. For most patients this procedure offers substantially-less pain and a much-shorter recovery period.

Laparoscopic surgery

Laparoscopic surgery uses a thin, telescopic-like instrument called a laparoscope, which is inserted through a small incision at the belly button. The laparoscope is connected to a tiny video camera that projects a view of the operative site through video monitors located in the Operating Room. The abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide gas to allow the surgeon a better view of the operative area. Two or three additional small incisions are made near the laparoscope through which the surgeon inserts specialized surgical instruments. The surgeon uses these instruments to remove the endometriosis and scarred tissue around it, while preserving the uterus, tubes and ovaries. Following the procedure, the small incisions are closed with sutures and covered with surgical tape. After a few months, they are barely visible.
