Novant Health Vascular Diagnostics – Winston-Salem offers noninvasive diagnostic testing using vascular ultrasound. This type of test uses soundwaves to create images of structures inside the body. Our providers can complete most testing in our office, which requires fewer appointments and less travel for you.

Our team of vascular specialists and registered vascular technologists oversees testing. Most studies take 30 to 60 minutes. Studies we regularly complete include:

  • Carotid duplex (an ultrasound to evaluate blood flow)
  • Duplex evaluation, for deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Evaluation of varicose veins (enlarged veins that often appear blue or purple)
  • Upper and lower extremity vein mapping (mapping of veins in arms and legs)
  • Pulse volume recording (PVR), to help locate blockages, and segmental pressures, to evaluate blood pressure in the limbs
  • PVR with exercise (a measurement of blood pressure in the limbs taken while exercising)
  • Arterial duplex studies (to capture images of major arteries)
  • Digital arterial examinations with warming (exam that looks at blood flow in the fingers or toes)
  • Femoral and popliteal aneurysm duplex (ultrasound study of the femoral and/or popliteal artery in the leg)
  • Thoracic outlet syndrome testing (nerve conduction studies, vascular studies and x-rays used to diagnose thoracic outlet syndrome, a condition involving compressed blood vessels or nerves between the collarbone and the first rib)
  • Dialysis access evaluation (examining the blood vessels to determine the best way to access the bloodstream for dialysis)
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) evaluation (imaging procedures, including ultrasounds and CT scans, to diagnose a bulge or abnormality in the aorta running through the abdomen)
  • Iliac artery duplex (an ultrasound to examine the aorta and other arteries that bring blood to the organs)
  • Renal artery duplex (an ultrasound to examine blood flow to the kidneys)
  • Mesenteric artery duplex (an ultrasound to examine blood flow to the intestines)
  • Visceral aneurysm duplex (imaging to examine blood flow to the spleen, kidneys, liver and intestines)
  • Lower extremity bypass graft and stent (a procedure to improve bloodflow to the legs and feet)
  • Carotid endarterectomy and stent (a procedure to remove plaque and restore blood flow through the carotid artery in the neck)
  • Aortic endograft (a procedure done to reduce blood pressure on the aorta)
