Rotation Description: The resident will have the opportunity to develop skills in providing pharmaceutical care to medical critical care patients and to acquire an understanding of the pharmacist's role on the MICU interdisciplinary team. The resident will participate in patient care rounds with intensivists, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, dieticians, and other members of the MICU team. The resident will develop skills in the assessment and pharmaceutical care management of critical care patients.

Rotation(s): Emergency Medicine
Rotation Description: The resident will have the opportunity to participate as a member of a multidisciplinary emergency department (ED) team and to respond to all medical emergencies including, but not limited to: strokes, STEMIs, cardiac arrests, and rapid sequence intubations. The resident will develop skills in bedside medication preparation and consultation. The resident will perform chart reviews to optimize medication therapy, provide healthcare provider education, perform ED culture reviews, and answer drug information questions.

Rotation(s): Administration/Practice management
Rotation Description: The resident will develop leadership skills and acquire an understanding of the administrative aspects of pharmacy practice. The rotation will focus on applying management principles while observing department and hospital policy and procedures. Rotation experiences may also include budget management, strategic planning, and process improvement projects.

Rotation(s): Transitions of care
Rotation Description: This rotation allows the resident to further develop and apply patient counseling skills by educating patients as they are discharged from inpatient care. The resident will focus on identifying and educating the patients in most need, including those with a heart failure diagnosis and those on an anticoagulant. The resident will also support several pharmacy services including interdisciplinary rounds, medication reviews, and serve as a liaison to the pharmacy department.

Rotation(s): Internal Medicine (medical/surgical)
Rotation Description: The Internal Medicine rotation provides the resident with the opportunity to participate in direct-patient care activities and gain experience practicing as a clinical pharmacist in the inpatient setting, managing medical and surgery patients in a variety of disease states. During the learning experience, the resident will develop and monitor pharmaceutical care plans, participate in multidisciplinary rounds, answer drug information questions, offer medication counseling to patients, and co-precept students, if applicable. Residents will engage in topic discussions with the preceptor, provide a journal club presentation, and provide an in-service.

Rotation Description: Clinical Operations is a required learning experience as part of the PGY1 pharmacy residency program at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center. The primary goals of this rotation enable the resident to become proficient in order verification, reviewing clinical system lists, and precepting 4th year student pharmacists. In this practice area, duties include order verification, clinical pharmacy dosing program review through system lists, documentation within the electronic medical record, and oversight of medication preparation and distribution.

Rotation(s): Infectious diseases, antimicrobial stewardship
Rotation Description: The resident will have the opportunity to participate in various antimicrobial stewardship activities at multiple community hospitals within Novant Health. Residents will evaluate antimicrobial regimens and collaborate with providers and other pharmacists to ensure patients receive appropriate and streamlined therapy. Topic discussions may include antimicrobial drug classes, infectious disease states, and microbiology. The rotation will be tailored towards the resident’s knowledge and interests within infectious diseases.

Rotation(s): Administration/Practice management
Rotation Description: During this rotation, residents will gain exposure to the vast areas of pharmacy management and operations. Topics include, but are not limited to, workflow design, human resources (i.e., talent management, compliance training, etc.), productivity, and leadership development. Residents will also learn the foundations of medication safety, compliance and regulatory entities, procurement, and automation. By the rotation’s conclusion, residents will know how to lead Central Pharmacy by utilizing both clinical and operational resources to provide remarkable patient care.

Rotation Description: The resident will have the opportunity to support several pharmacy services to provide patient-centered care on the cardiac unit. The resident will participate in interdisciplinary rounds to assist with medication reviews, help identify patient barriers to medications and discharge, and be a resource to the medical team. Residents will also participate in interdisciplinary rounds specific to stroke patient management. The resident will provide education on heart failure, ACS/MI, stroke, and anticoagulation therapy to respective patients. The residents will support order verification, drug monitoring, and drug information requests from nurses and providers.

Rotation Description: This rotation offers the resident the opportunity to develop and apply patient management skills by providing comprehensive pharmaceutical services including clinical medication reviews, pharmacotherapy consults, pharmacokinetic analysis, drug information, and intensive monitoring of patients with a variety of psychiatric disorders on each behavioral health unit (adult and geriatric). The resident will be an active participant in project initiatives to advance the behavioral health unit, interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, in-services to other pharmacists/nursing staff and will serve as a unit liaison to the pharmacy department.

Rotation Description: This longitudinal rotation focuses on central pharmacy operations and staffing. The resident will be exposed to various aspects of central pharmacy operations including, but not limited to electronic order entry and verification, sterile IV preparation and verification, transfer and documentation of narcotics, management of pharmacy personnel and workflow, drug information service to hospital staff, adjustments to drug therapy, and antimicrobial consults. The resident staffing experience will blend both operational and clinical roles associated with acute care pharmacy.
