FMC PGY1 Pharmacy Residency

At Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, our PGY1 residency program strives to develop pharmacy clinicians who provide optimal patient care and safety. Upon graduation, the resident is able to exhibit quality professional leadership skills along with competent functionality in various pharmacy practice roles.

Program description

The Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center PGY1 pharmacy residency entails 12 months of training and experience in multiple aspects. Its goals, objectives and evaluation processes are established in accordance to ASHP standards. The program allows flexibility to meet the needs and interests of each individual resident while also providing a quality foundation in developing professional practice skills.

Pharmacy PGY1 curriculum

Required rotations
Elective rotations

Infectious disease
At least two rotations from the following:
  • Oncology
  • Surgery
  • Neurology
  • Neonatal ICU
  • Behavioral health
  • Internal medicine
At least one rotation from the following:
  • Med/surg critical care
  • Cardiac ICU
  • CT surgery
  • Emergency department
Service leadership (longitudinal)
Seminar/MUE (longitudinal)
Project (longitudinal)
Ambulatory care (may be longitudinal)
Practice management (longitudinal)
Elective rotations
Ambulatory care (anticoagulation clinic, stroke bridge clinic)
Administration (operations, clinical leadership, local or corporate)
System level medication safety
Mentor and co-precept the 4th year pharmacy students
Opportunities to teach at High Point University School of Pharmacy
Present journal articles, cases, MUE and topics when assigned to pharmacy and/or other hospital staff
Service leadership
Every other weekend staffing, alternating between first and second shift. Service includes functioning as lead pharmacist or verification pharmacist. Compensation of one weekday will be allowed for every weekend worked.

Upon completion, residents will have gained the following skills:

  • Proficient leadership and practice management skills
  • Valuable and efficient patient-centered medication therapy management support on a health care team

Note that some travel may be required for rotations.
