Willie Wheezer Asthma Camp

An environment for children to better manage asthma

At Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center, our goal is to provide children with expert care so they can live a healthy and active lifestyle. That’s why we host the annual Willie Wheezer Asthma Summer Day Camp for children ages 7 to 12.

The camp provides an environment for children to participate in outdoor activities and to grow physically and mentally while increasing their ability to manage asthma. The camp is held at Camp Keyauwee in Sophia, N.C. and the Cardiopulmonary Department of Thomasville Medical Center serves as counselors for the daylong event.

Activities

Campers can experience these activities:

  • Fishing
  • Hiking
  • Swimming
  • Arts and crafts
  • Canoeing and paddleboats
  • Asthma management counseling

Mike Crabb, Registered Respiratory Therapist, says "the American Lung Association reports that 6.2 million children under the age of 18 suffer from asthma. In addition, asthma accounted for an estimated 14 million lost school days in children and is the third leading cause of hospitalization among children under the age of 15. Our goal is to provide the children a camp that will be a time of recreation and education in hopes of reducing lost school days or hospital admissions for the attendees by helping them better manage their asthma."

Financial scholarships are provided by Novant Health Foundation Thomasville Medical Center.
