Hospice care

If you or a loved one has fallen ill and need special care, our hospice specialists can help. Improving the quality of a patient’s last days is at the forefront of the services we offer.

Our team of doctors, nurses, medical social workers, chaplains, grief counselors and volunteers will work together to ensure that pain and physical symptoms are managed properly. We use an individualized treatment plan to ensure that you and your family’s needs are being met to the highest standards.

Harris Hospice Unit

For many families, the Harris Hospice Unit becomes a home away from home. It serves as a short-stay transitional unit for families; it is the area’s only inpatient hospice unit. Our goal is to meet the needs of both the patient and the family by offering a coordinated team approach to provide care and emotional support. With the guidance of our staff, we can teach you and your family the skills necessary to provide care-giving services to your loved one. We will also help coordinate plans for returning home after symptoms are under control.

Support and compassion

It is normal for you or your family to have feelings of stress or grief when a family member is suffering from a serious illness or facing their last days. When you need help facing these difficult challenges, our grief and bereavement support groups are here to help. Our focus is not to tell you how to grieve but to give you the information and support to help you cope with your feelings in a healthy way.

In addition to providing you with resources and support through our classes and programs, we also provide spiritual care for patients and their families. We offer prayer ministry services, a prayer wall, chaplains and our Jack Matney Memorial Labyrinth for anyone needing emotional and spiritual relief.

Also, a new Remembrance Wall has been unveiled in the Labyrinth Courtyard at Presbyterian Medical Center. This unique tiled painting provides you with a special way to pay tribute to loved ones and friends, while supporting a worthy cause—the expansion of cancer, heart and hospice services for Novant Health’s greater Charlotte market. Learn more about the Remembrance Wall and securely donate now online.

Volunteers

Volunteers are an important part of our hospice team. Each volunteer receives extensive training from our healthcare staff that equips him or her with the tools needed to work closely with you and your family. Some volunteers share music; others arrange flowers, style hair, or provide pet therapy. Many simply provide the gift of time by sitting with patients.
