Managing your diabetes can be hard to do, but Novant Health Diabetes Center can help you make it easier. Our doctors provide advanced treatments and diagnoses, and they teach you how to effectively self-manage your diabetes. We provide a variety of educational programs that are designed to meet all of your personal needs and give you the tools needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

You are the most important factor when it comes to treating your diabetes, and knowledge is your most useful tool. Located in Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center's physician plaza - 10030 Gilead Road, Suite B120, Huntersville, NC 28078 - Novant Health Diabetes Center offers a variety of programs that can teach you how to control the disease’s impact on your daily life. The programs we offer include:

Diabetes self-management program - Learn how to manage your diabetes with our three-part, self-management course, Living with Diabetes. From learning about the basics, such as the skills needed to control blood sugars and how to use a blood glucose monitor, to more in-depth skills such as carbohydrate counting and how to order when eating out, our team will teach you the ‘ins and outs’ of managing diabetes. Physician referral required. The course consists of three parts:

  • Part I: Basics of Diabetes
  • Part II: Living with Diabetes
  • Part III: Three-Month Follow-Up

Gestational diabetes / diabetes and pregnancy program - This program provides in-depth education on managing gestational diabetes and preexisting diabetes and pregnancy. For patients with gestational diabetes, the curriculum includes:

  • Explanation of gestational diabetes
  • Risks to the baby
  • Prevention of type 2 diabetes postpartum
  • Blood glucose monitoring and glucose goals
  • Exercise
  • Stress management
  • Nutrition education and individualized meal plans
  • Signs and symptoms of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia
  • Goal-setting
  • Insulin instruction, when needed

Ongoing follow-up is provided throughout pregnancy, as needed.

For patients with preexisting diabetes, the curriculum includes:

  • Explanation of risks for mother and baby
  • Blood glucose monitoring and glucose goals
  • Exercise
  • Stress management
  • Nutrition education and individualized meal plans
  • Signs and symptoms of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia
  • Goal-setting
  • Insulin instruction

Ongoing follow-up is provided throughout pregnancy, as needed.

Nutrition consults - If you are living with diabetes or are at high risk for developing it, it is important to work with a nutritionist to determine the best foods for you to eat. At our Diabetes Resource Center, we offer one-on-one consultations with certified diabetes educators and registered dietitians. A physician referral is required.

Education for parents who have a child living with diabetes – If your child is living with diabetes, we’re here to help. Our Diabetes Resource Centers offer one-on-one appointments with children and their parents to assist in learning to manage the disease. A provider referral is required.

Treating and preventing diabetes

Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising, eating a healthy diet and reducing stress are important when it comes to treating and preventing diabetes; we will give you the tools you need to successfully make these lifestyle changes. We also help identify risk factors for diabetes and conduct diabetes screenings if you are at risk of developing the disease.
