Managing your osteoporosis risk

Having strong bones is something most of us take for granted; but as you enter midlife, your risk for developing weaker, more fragile bones increases.

Early prevention

Osteoporosis may be prevented. You can reduce your risk of developing osteoporosis with proper diet, exercise and in some cases, medication. A calcium-rich diet and weight-bearing exercises will help build strong bones. The body needs 1000 to 1200 mgs of calcium each day and, for the body to use the calcium, it also needs Vitamin D. Vitamin D is found in eggs, fortified milk, and liver and is formed from sunlight on the skin. It is important to decrease carbohydrates, soda, caffeine, alcohol and sugar intake, along with stopping smoking.

While the best defense against osteoporosis is early prevention, there are still steps you can take now to prevent further bone loss and improve your overall bone health, including eating a calcium-rich diet and participating in weight-bearing exercises.
