You deserve the best
gynecologic surgical care
We know that gynecologic surgery is a sensitive subject for you. You probably wouldn’t be reading this unless you were experiencing symptoms that concerned you or your physician had talked with you about the possibility of surgery.
Rest assured that with our gynecologic surgeons, you’re in good hands. If you do require surgery, we’ll fully discuss all the options and procedures with you. You’ve probably heard about minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, in which very small surgical instruments and a tiny video camera (a laparoscope) are inserted through very small incisions. This procedure was actually pioneered to treat gynecologic conditions but is now used for many other types of operations.
Today, Novant Health gynecologic surgeons use minimally invasive procedures for a variety of conditions because it reduces the chance of infection and results in less pain and quicker recovery than traditional surgery.

Hysterectomy - Hysterectomy, surgical removal of the uterus, is one of the most commonly-performed surgical procedures in the United States, but we know it’s a major decision for you.
Your Novant Health physician may recommend a hysterectomy if you have fibroids; endometriosis that is not cured by medicine or surgery; prolapsed uterus; cancer of the uterus, cervix or ovaries; persistent vaginal bleeding or chronic pelvic pain.
At Novant Health, we are trained in a number of procedures, including advanced da Vinci® robotic-assisted surgery as well as laparoscopic, traditional abdominal and vaginal procedures. Your recovery time may vary depending on the seriousness of your condition and the surgical method used for treatment.
Dilation and curettage - This procedure (also called D&C) involves enlarging your cervix to clean the uterine lining. Women routinely have a D&C to prevent infection or heavy bleeding or after a miscarriage or abortion. A D&C is also performed to remove fibroid or cancerous growths or to correct hormone imbalances. It may be performed in a clinic or a medical center setting using varying amounts of anesthesia during the procedure.
Endometriosis treatment - If your uterine lining, the endometrium, produces cells that implant and grow outside your womb, this can cause bleeding and pain. Novant Health surgeons and gynecologists are experienced in prescribing oral or injected hormones to slow the growth of endometriosis.
If hormonal treatments are ineffective, laparoscopic removal through surgery may successfully stop the problem.
Hysteroscopy - A hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that enables our surgeons to inspect the uterine cavity and, when necessary, perform surgery for the removal of fibroid growth or cancers, correct abnormal bleeding or treat other conditions that affect the uterus.
Generally, this is an outpatient procedure, so recovery is much more rapid than with traditional abdominal surgeries.
Uterine fibroid removal - About 25 percent of women have noncancerous fibroid growths in the uterus. These benign growths are not malignant in nature but can cause pain or bleeding and block openings in the uterus. You may also experience bladder pain or pressure.
Novant Health surgeons are experienced in treating this condition, usually through minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. Recovery from uterine fibroid surgery is generally quick with minimal scarring.
Urinary incontinence treatment with a bladder sling - If you’re experiencing stress-related female urinary incontinence, your Novant Health physician may suggest a bladder sling. The bladder sling operates by producing enough urethral compression to allow you to regain control of your bladder. The sling can be placed during a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure.
