Delivering high-quality cardiovascular care

Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center is a national leader in cardiac outcomes. Through our commitment to quality, we are able to increase survival and recovery rates following a cardiac event when compared with national benchmarks. Often cardiac conditions can be treated with medication and other nonsurgical options. However, if you and your physician determine that a cardiac procedure is necessary, you want to know what hospital provides the best chance for your recovery.

We report our cardiac outcomes to The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). The STS represents more than 6,200 surgeons and healthcare professionals worldwide who are dedicated to ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients who need surgery of the heart, lung and chest. That data below was compiled from them.

STS overall facility score

The overall score is a ranking of all the STS indicators combined together. This is a good reflection of the overall care provided by the facilities doing cardiac bypass surgeries. The 3-star designation recognizes healthcare facilities that are considered top performers.

STS percent of mortality

This is an estimate of the true percentage of patients who should not die if the treating facility manages the patient like a typical STS facility would.

STS percent of morbidity

This is an estimate of the true percentage of patients who experienced any type of complication from the surgery. This percentage should be as low as possible. Results are compared to all of the centers that participate in the STS cardiac surgery database.

STS use of the internal mammary artery

The internal mammary artery (IMA) is a preferred artery to use during bypass surgery. This score is an estimate of the true percentage of heart attack patients who would have had the IMA used, which is associated with a better long-term outcome.

STS medications

This score is an estimate of the true percentage of heart attack patients who would have had all the recommended medications. Use of these medications is associated with a better outcome.
