Medicare Part D : Older Adults : Step1

Return

Are you eligible? How do you get coverage through Medicare D?

Anyone on Medicare is eligible for prescription drug coverage. Private firms provide the coverage. Although their plans must meet Medicare’s stringent rules, companies may differ in terms of costs and coverage. You can compare plans by clicking here.

In most cases, if you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage health plan, you’ll get your prescription drug coverage through that plan. If you have drug coverage already (from a former employer or union, for instance), your insurer will let you know how that coverage stacks up to standard Medicare Part D coverage.

To join a Medicare prescription drug plan you must have Medicare Part A or Part B. In contrast, to join a Medicare Advantage plan, you must have Medicare Part A AND Part B. You must also live in the service area of the Medicare plan you want to join.

You can find answers to many questions by visiting the Medicare website, or by calling 800-MEDICARE (800-633-4227). TTY users should call 877-486-2048.

You can also receive free personalized insurance counseling through your state health insurance counseling and assistance program, or SHIP. To find your state's health insurance phone number, click here, or call 800-MEDICARE.

In addition, the "Medicare and You" handbook and the "Your Guide to Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage" booklet can provide basic information on Medicare Part D.
