As parents, we are all concerned about our child's health. Today's fast-paced lifestyle makes it harder than ever to ensure that our kids get the nutrition and exercise they need.

KidSmart® is a program of the Maya Angelou Women's Health & Wellness Center. The program's goal is to help children and their families learn about making healthy food and lifestyle choices in a fun way.

Did you know that:

  • One out of every five children in the U.S. today is overweight.
  • That includes more than 10% of children ages 2-5 and more than 15% of children ages 6-9.
  • In the past 30 years, the percentage of overweight kids in the U.S. has more than doubled.

These statistics are even more startling when we look beyond childhood:

  • Kids who are overweight have a 70% probability of being overweight or even obese as adults.
  • That likelihood increases to 80% if one or both parents are overweight or obese.

We invite you to explore the KidSmart website, which has helpful hints and tools for parents. And we encourage your kids to visit the kids section of the site, too.

KidSmart articles

KidSmart articles are produced throughout the year by the Maya Angelou Women's Health & Wellness Center. Topics include healthy eating and nutrition, weight management and positive body image, and a variety of other issues that are important for women and their families. The articles can be great resources to share with teachers, play groups, kid's camps, sports clubs and other places where parents gather.

To view the articles, you will need to have Adobe Reader on your computer. If you do not have a PDF reader, you can download one for free.

Women with disabilities

The Maya Angelou Women's Health & Wellness Center handles the care of women with disabilities to meet their needs for accessibility just like every woman we treat. Appointments, screenings and exams are available with specially designed equipment for ease of access, and no woman is declined treatment due to a disability. We recognize that every person is different, each is shaped by unique life experiences and abilities and each deserves the same quality of care.
