to excellence and are constantly working to stay on the leading edge
of rehabilitation techniques and technology.
specialize in helping patients recovering from stroke, brain injury,
amputations, spinal cord injury and other complex medical,
neurological and orthopedic conditions. Each year, our team cares for
about 1,000 patients in our inpatient program, with 96% showing
improvement in functional independence from admission to discharge.
addition to basic therapies to help patients regain independence, our
inpatient center also houses several specialty rehab clinics. For
patients who need assistive technology, the North Carolina Assistive
Technology Project offers services on-site and can work with patients
who need special devices to help with daily living needs. Additional
services include our wheelchair clinic and low-vision clinics. We
also have a driving clinic, which is a safe place to have elderly or
injured individuals tested when motor skills, reflexes, mental or
visual abilities have become impaired.

is the Lowes Foods Life Learning Lab, a simulated grocery store
where physical and occupational therapists can help you return to
some of the activities of daily life. Dietitians also use the
lab for patient education about healthy eating habits, reading food
labels and identifying which foods are best for you.

Our rehabilitation team

staff of dedicated experts, including athletic trainers,
audiologists, dietitians, specialty trained and certified
occupational and physical therapists, physicians, psychologists,
speech language pathologists, social workers,
rehabilitation-certified registered nurses, and researchers who are
developing new “best practices” in rehabilitation.
Health Rehabilitation Center has several unique features to maximize
the patient recovery process, including the following:
electrical stimulation: upper and lower extremity devices to help
patients suffering from stroke, injury or illness regain mobility
weight supported treadmill training: overhead suspension system that
helps the patient safely learn to walk again after stroke, injury or
pool: safe and accessible therapy pool to allow patients to move in
water, taking weight off of joints while providing even resistance
for improving movement, strength and balance
Foods Life Learning Lab: full grocery store environment for patients
to practice pushing a cart, retrieving items from shelves, using a
shopping list, making choices, paying for items at a functional
check-out, using a debit card and even withdrawing money from an ATM
– all within a safe environment
of Daily Living apartment: This apartment enables practice of cooking
skills, housekeeping skills and mobility in a kitchen and bedroom
space while accompanied by a therapist.
and family resource room: This new resource room has educational
materials on many diagnoses, resources for after discharge as well
as caregiver resources. It includes a computer for informational
searches, a TV with a DVD player for viewing educational videos, a
reading area, and a flexible seating area for group meetings and
therapeutic sessions. It is staffed by hospital volunteers who have
been through the rehab program themselves.

– Our mentor program pairs previous patients with people
with recent amputations to share experiences and offer support.
