At Novant, our vision is to deliver the most remarkable patient experience, in every dimension, every time. When we adopted this new vision, we began to use more frequently the basic art of storytelling as a communication tool. Our leaders were the first to use stories to help instill a system-wide passion for creating a remarkable patient experience.

Then one day, a few staff heard the story of a hospital security officer who was also a proud veteran of the American Legion Color Guard. He paid a special tribute to the nation's servicemen and women on the Veteran's Day holiday. Clad in his Navy dress blues, he visited hospitalized patients who had served in the military and personally thanked each of them for their dedication to protecting America.

Novant realized there were a lot of similar stories throughout the organization -- stories that lingered in anonymity when they could potentially be having an enormous positive impact if shared with everyone. So, we asked leaders and employees to submit remarkable stories about Novant Health staff that highlighted their dedication to patients and families. The 46 selected stories were compiled into Novant's first coffee table book, One Person at a Time. Every one of the 46 stories is a living example of caring and compassion that reinforces our vision of delivering the most remarkable patient experience.
