Our Communities
Our hospitals and clinics serve large metropolitan cities, small towns and rural communities from the ocean to the mountains.
Sponsorships
Our organization helps sponsor hundreds of community and statewide organizations and events. In 2008, our health system invested approximately $2.6 million in community agencies and programs. Following are some examples of the diverse organizations that benefit from our sponsorships:
Adopting families
Novant facilities and staff have a strong history of adopting needy families over the holidays and during a crisis, providing them with food, clothing, personal care items and basic appliances. For instance, one of our hospitals adopted 107 families in between Thanksgiving and New Year's. As another example, one of our hospital cardiology teams sent some holiday cheer to the Middle East when its staff adopted a medical platoon of about 35 soldiers stationed in Iraq. Employees collected a huge array of items ranging from candy and beef jerky to bar soap and antibiotic ointment and shipped the care package to arrive just in time for the holidays.
Presbyterian Health Ministry
They engage the faith communities through the services of 16 employees and numerous volunteers. Parish nurses, minority health educators and support staff serve congregations in Charlotte to improve healthcare. Solomon House serves the Huntersville and surrounding areas with a specific health ministry that serves uninsured minorities. The Health Ministry and Pastoral Education program serve people through health screenings, health education programs, home and hospital visits, counseling and community outreach. Learn More
Sara Lee Center for Women's Health Community Outreach
The Center at Forsyth Medical Center is one of the largest birthing centers on the East Coast. One aspect of its mission is to reach out to women with health services and education. Following are some of the Sara Lee Center for Women's Health initiatives: infant and child CPR classes in both English and Spanish; Healthy Family Adolescent Weight Management program, designed for families struggling with adolescent weight issues; Girls on the Run program for 3rd-5th graders; Safe Sitter babysitting workshops; perinatal bereavement program for grieving parents and annual Walk to Remember; and the Spanish language women's health public service radio show on Que Pasa and in a newspaper series. The Sara Lee Center for Women's Health launched a new KidSmart campaign to help kids and families make healthy food and activity choices. The first phase includes a campaign with local restaurants that provide five of seven healthy menu offerings to be certified as a KidSmart venue. In addition, the Sara Lee Center for Women's Health has collaborated with the Winston-Salem Forsyth County and Davie County school systems to calculate body mass indexes of more than 18,000 children, to help parents identify if their children are at risk of being overweight or underweight.
The Solomon House
Established by Presbyterian Healthcare, The Solomon House serves the poor and uninsured in the Lake Norman area by providing free health education and referrals to local community resources. Located on the grounds of Huntersville Presbyterian Church, The Solomon House works closely which churches and human service agencies to provide full access to health and human services for people who may not already have linkages or know where to turn. The Solomon House provides people with health screenings, educational programs and support groups, and referrals to healthcare providers, free community clinics and social service agencies. These programs are supported by grants from The Duke Endowment, March of Dimes, Foundation for the Carolinas, and financial and in-kind contributions from local churches, businesses and individuals. The Charlotte Community Health Clinic
Presbyterian Hospital provides support to Charlotte Community Health Clinic, a critical community resource serving low income, uninsured patients who are not eligible for state/federal assistance and have no other access to healthcare. The clinic provides free medical care, chronic disease management (Diabetic Clinics, Cardiovascular Clinics), diagnostics, laboratory services, Women's Clinic screenings as well as referrals for prescribed medications and specialty care. The clinic has added a Health Educator and health classes to serve its low-literacy, culturally diverse patient population. Approximately 50 volunteer physicians and eight midlevel providers as well as over 200 nurses, phlebotomists, interpreters and administrative staff volunteer their services to provide patient care. Presbyterian's ongoing support for operations, information technology, laboratory and diagnostic services has been vital in the clinic's growth and success in caring for our community's uninsured. Community Care Center
Forsyth Medical Center provides funding to support this important community resource. Forsyth Medical Center and Novant Health also donate the use of a medical office building to the Forsyth-Stokes-Davie Medical Society to support the free Community Care Center. In addition, Forsyth arranges for free lab testing for the center's patients. While the center provides care to people without adequate health insurance, the majority of its patients are Hispanic and other minorities. Novant physicians and employees and others from the community help staff the center.
Metrolina Comprehensive Health Center
This federally qualified health center serves very needy neighborhoods and residents in Charlotte who are at risk of not accessing essential, basic healthcare services, including pediatric and newborn care. The Center also extends care to the homeless. Presbyterian Hospital provides financial support to help the center as well as office support services and assistance in recruiting physicians and other clinicians to better serve this important population.
World Medical Mission
Novant donates supplies to the World Medical Mission that is sponsored by the Franklin Graham Missionary Group. These supplies are frequently outdated in a fast-changing American healthcare system but still valuable to countries struggling to provide basic healthcare needs. We have donated catheters, eye surgery supplies, diagnostic imaging supplies, IV equipment and other medical supplies.
